Second Dinner ditches Nuverse as Marvel Snap publisher, partners with Skystone Games

- Second Dinner has officially cut ties with Nuverse as publisher of Marvel Snap
- The developer is now partnered with US-based publisher Skystone Games
- It caps off a truly remarkable series of events in the wake of the Bytedance TikTok ban
Well, it appears that in the wake of Marvel Snap being unceremoniously pulled from app stores in the wake of Bytedance’s TikTok gambit, developer Second Dinner has cut ties with publisher Nuverse. In an announcement on their official Twitter, Second Dinner stated they would now be partnering with US-based publisher Skystone Games.
It caps off a remarkable series of events for many releases published by Nuverse and other Bytedance subsidiaries, such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Marvel Snap, after finding themselves swept up in the TikTok ban a few weeks ago. Bytedance had seemingly taken a gambit to deprive audiences of their favourite apps, prompting a promise by then president-elect Donald Trump to restore service.
It was a dramatic turnaround from his previous attempts to ban Bytedance’s flagship app, and while TikTok was soon back up without much issue it seems others on the gaming side of things were left in the lurch. Second Dinner in particular wasn’t notified about Snap being pulled, and has spent the better part of a few weeks trying to restore service.
Avengers disassembled
It’s not exactly surprising that Second Dinner has ditched Nuverse. While Bytedance’s gambit with TikTok paid off for them, few developers likely took kindly to their releases being disrupted in such an overt and unexpected way. I’ve no doubt that the rapid nature of this change indicates that behind the scenes Nuverse is dealing with huge fallout from developers.
While it’s tempting to make broad statements about geopolitics here, I think it’s more pertinent to wonder whether or not Bytedance in their eagerness to keep TikTok alive has kneecapped their highly-publicised gaming ambitions. Second Dinner certainly seems to think so.
