  • Chrono Trigger has hit its 30-year-milestone
  • Various projects will be announced soon
  • A concert will air on YouTube on March 14th

Square Enix has announced that Chrono Trigger has just hit its 30-year milestone. The celebration is being marked with various projects that are set to release throughout the next year. While it hasn’t been revealed exactly what these projects are, the wording suggests they may just extend beyond the game itself.

The announcement has sparked plenty of speculation among fans, many of whom have waited decades for a proper remaster or modern console release. Despite its status as one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time, Chrono Trigger has never received a full-fledged remake or even a PlayStation re-release beyond the PS1 port in 1999.

Over the years, it’s made its way to PC and mobile, but a definitive modern version remains elusive. Given Square Enix’s track record of revisiting its classics, there’s always hope, but for now, the only concrete anniversary event is a special livestream featuring its legendary soundtrack. The concert will air on YouTube on March 14th at 7:00 p.m. PT and run until early the next morning.

For those unfamiliar, Chrono Trigger is an epic time-travelling RPG crafted by a dream team of developers, including Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, Dragon Quest mastermind Yuji Horii, and legendary Dragon Ball artist Akira Toriyama.

Originally released in 1995 for the Super Famicom and SNES, the RPG follows Crono and his companions as they journey through different eras, from a prehistoric world of dinosaurs to a dystopian future ravaged by an alien force. Along the way, you’ll recruit allies, alter history, and take on one of the most iconic final bosses in gaming.

The 30th anniversary is a huge milestone, and while there’s no confirmation of a remake or even a console port just yet, Square Enix’s statement at least keeps the door open. Keep following Chrono Trigger’s X page to stay updated on what’s coming.
