  • Alien Core: Galaxy Invasion is out now on iOS
  • This low-res take on the genre offers all the classic features
  • Blast your way through the O-Core’s forces, upgrade your ship and grab powerups

Need a hit of top-down shooter action? Well, while there are plenty of great options already out there, there’s also a new launch just out the gate with Alien Core: Galaxy Invasion, out now on iOS! Does it offer something new to draw you into a well-trodden genre? Well, dig in and find out.

In Alien Core your job is simple, destroy the rogue AI known as O-Core that has turned against its creators and established the Ostallian Empire. Naturally, the easiest way to do that is in your own starship blasting your way through O-Core’s forces.

Alien Core takes a low-res approach to the bullet hell genre as it sees you racing through some basic but entertainingly retro spacescapes. You’ve got all the classics here with power-ups to nab, some basic ship upgrades to help you along, and the ability to blast enemy installations to shreds as they explore in a cascade of pixels.

Shoot the core!

With boss battles aplenty, various ships to unlock and a choice between an arcade and story mode, there’s plenty here with Alien Core that makes it worth a second glance. The chain-reaction mechanic, in particular, is one that catches my eye, since there’s something almost primally satisfying about blasting pixels into smithereens.

At the same time, I wouldn’t blame you for not being drawn in by Alien Core, as the graphics can seem a little too basic. Still, it’s obviously packed with plenty of features, so maybe it’s worth digging into if you want some fast-paced retro action.

In the meantime though, if you’re looking to find other top launches, why not go ahead and dig into our list of the top five new mobile games to try this week? Featuring the best releases from the last seven days!
