The Wrapp – Fantasy-themed Conga lines, platforming princes, and Go games

Hey there, welcome to our latest edition of The Wrapp.
This is a chance for you to see what the various members of the Pocket Gamer team are planning to play over this weekend and will, hopefully, give you an idea of some of the weird and wonderful things we get up to when we’re not keeping you up to speed with the latest news and tips. Heck, you might even find a new game to play.

Earlier this week I went full-ham on downloading games from Apple Arcade, spirited on by the big drop they just had of Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, Puffies, Rollercoaster Tycoon Classic and Katamari Damacy.
Puffies has been the overall winner for me, it’s a great little title all about building out sticker sheets (like a jigsaw) with weird-shaped, quirky artwork. I’ve been turn-taking playing it with my nine-year-old, who has very excitedly navigated us into the Duck and Capybara-themed packs.
Outside of this, I’ve finally completed a trade in Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket, as I’m desperate to get the expansions complete before the next one lands… which – by my math – is coming very soon. That said, I now only need two cards from Space-Time Smackdown and four for Shining Light.

I’ve finally pulled a Giratina EX and can now see what the fuss is about with this new Pokemon TCG Pocket meta. I’m partial to my humble little Croagunk myself, but we’ll see if this one will switch things up for me.
That said, we do talk a bit more about odd Pokemon in our Pocket Gamer Podcast, in which we promise to do our best not to go off on too many tangents from now on. Also, I’m working on an embargoed review for an emotionally charged point-and-click adventure again…gotta love some cathartic tears on a weekend!

With the Go series now back on mobile I think now is the perfect time for me to dive back in and return to Hitman Go and Deus Ex Go. These two excellent board game-like takes on their respective series were lost too soon, and it warms the cockles of my heart to see them make a return.
It seems that DECA will be taking stewardship of a variety of top releases that previously came out under Embracer. So hopefully they’ll remain custodians of this catalogue well into the future.

There are so many cute cosy games coming out this month that I’m slightly overwhelmed by which ones to pick up for this weekend. I’m leaning towards grabbing either Locomoto or Promise Mascot Agency. Well, the latter might not be super cosy, but it definitely looks cute. I can already tell that whichever one I land on is going to consume my whole weekend.

I am about 60 hours into Xenoblade Chronicles X at this point, so I figured it was time for a break. The urge to play Pokemon has been creeping up lately, so I swapped cartridges, booted up Pokemon Scarlet…..and then immediately shut it down, begged forgiveness from the Xenoblade gods, and returned to Mira. This is where I belong now.

Okay, in addition to being on the hunt for a new Off The AppStore star, I’ll be focusing on Prince of Persia: Lost Crown. This game popped up and completely shattered my idea of how Prince of Persia games should be. I mean, I loved all the free-form acrobat swordplay in 3D arenas that were very obviously arenas. They weren’t perfect, but they were creative and fun. Seeing it turned into a 2.5 platformer… It caught me by surprise. Whether it’s a good or bad surprise, I’ll find out soon.
But then again, I learned that Super Meat Boy Forever works much better as a mobile game, so maybe this will be the same deal.

Aside from trying to climb the ranked ladder in Pokemon TCG Pocket – which isn’t going fantastically but better than expected, so that’s a win, I reckon – I’m looking forward to playing MageTrain. It comes from developer Benjamin Dressler and is a bit of a departure from their previous effort, Crux, which focused on climbing.
Here, you create a merry band of fantasy-inspired characters and snake around the landscape, cutting down nasty beasties. Your party will attack automatically, meaning your main concern is movement outside of setting up your team for success in the first place. I’m hoping it’ll slot nicely into the casual strategy realm.
