Prison Gang Wars offers a colourful but gritty simulation of incarcerated life

- Prison Gang Wars is a newly-released simulator
- Work to dominate the yard with your own gang
- Split your time between overworld exploration and turn-based battles
Life in prison is difficult, partially by design, and translating that for entertainment can also be rather difficult. But, while it offers a more colourful take, Prison Gang Wars also promises to be an authentic translation of what real-life prison and its day-to-day dangers are like. And, if you want to experience that then, well, you can, as it’s out now on iOS and Android.
Prison Gang Wars is, at times, oddly enough a turn-based RPG. You’ll explore an overworld set inside the titular penitentiary and work your way through the intricate factions and politics of prison life, occasionally jumping into turn-based, brutal battles with other inmates. Smuggling, dealing and other illicit activities all depends on the favour and influence of different factions that control various parts of the prison.
Essentially, this is less ‘Double Dragon’ and a little more of a tycoon-esque take on the life of an inmate. You’ll slowly grow your gang and make connections with other prisoners, guards and even the outside world to make your incarcerated life as comfortable as possible.
Like Runescape, but with more shivs
While it may be based on real-world prison life, it’s clear that Prison Gang Wars has taken some liberties to make it entertaining. Not that this is a bad thing, but if you’re expecting Ashley Cain’s Into The Danger Zone (ooh, topical reference) you might be disappointed.
However, Prison Gang Wars promises to offer enough authentic flavouring to make it distinct from other incarceration simulators. And I’ve no doubt that navigating the warfare of prison gangs and dealing with the everyday dangers of incarcerated life will prove chilling and thrilling on its concept alone.
While we’re always covering top releases like Prison Gang Wars, we’re also Ahead of the Game with our regular feature of the same name. So be sure to check it out as Catherine dives into weekly examples of games that you can play in early access on mobile.
