  • Sonic Blitz has just hit soft launch in the Philippines
  • It’s a fast-paced card battler with collectable decks based on famous Sonic faces
  • Battle it out in a variety of locations from the series and use the Dash attack to trigger animations

When Rovio was bought by Sega, I think almost everyone agreed that there was certain to be a host of new releases out of it. But I don’t think I’m alone in being surprised by just how rapidly that’s come to pass, especially with another new release in the form of Sonic Blitz hitting a surprise soft launch in the Philippines!

Sonic Blitz certainly is a standout, because unlike something such as Sonic Rumble (a Fall Guys-like battle royale), it seems like a complete departure for the Sonic franchise. How so? Well, it’s a deckbuilding card battler that sees you collecting cards based on your favourite Sonic characters.

But, in fairness, despite being a card battler, it’s not at all slow. Boasting three-minute matches with ever-changing rules, Sonic Blitz promises to take minutes to learn and then provide hours of fun for you and your friends.

Everything and the kitchen sink

It’s not hard to see where Rovio might have gained inspiration for Sonic Blitz. The cards you gather are depicted with detailed 3D models that promise to be just like ‘the real thing’, not unlike Pokémon TCG Pocket. Meanwhile, the three-minute matches are, of course, not unusual now, but were pushed quite hard on mobile by another branded card battler, Marvel Snap.

Sonic Blitz even comes with its own signature mechanic, the Dash attack, that offers special animations for each card. Unfortunately, there’s no info on a worldwide release, but doubtless if Sonic Blitz does well over in the Philippines, we’ll see a bit more about it in the near future!

If you’re looking to check out other top card battlers out there, then there are plenty of options. Why not check out our list of the top 15 best card battlers on iOS, or the new season of Marvel Snap?
