Rhythm Control 2 resurrects an old classic from more than a decade ago, out now on Android

One thing I’ve always been stunned that mobile seems to lack is a vibrant rhythm game scene. Of course, there have been some major hits like Space Ape’s Beatstar, but the majority of the genre seems to still be solidly on PC and elsewhere. But we’ve had a new entry making a surprise reappearance as Rhythm Control 2 is out now on Android!
Eagle-eyed and (my apologies) older readers may recognise the name, and that’s because Rhythm Control 2 was originally released way back in the halcyon years of 2012. The original Rhythm Control reportedly topped the charts in Japan and Sweden, so a sequel only seemed to make sense.
Boasting tracks from a variety of Japanese and Western artists such as Bit Shifter, YMCK, Boeoes Kaelstigen and Slagsmålsklubben, Rhythm Control 2 comes with a twist on the format. Rather than tapping falling icons, you’ll instead be presented with six nodes to tap in succession, growing increasingly complicated as you go and with additional twists and turns to adapt to.
Control yourself
Rhythm Control 2 looks to me like a worthy addition to the genre, and a welcome return to mobile. As much as I do like Beatstar I always felt its song choices were a bit too safe, for lack of a better term. After all, what’s the rhythm game about if not chasing a high score and being thwarted by some obscure Japanese techno song that sparks a lifelong, debilitating interest in an equally niche genre?
